This Dead Drop is a curatorial project, hosted on the premises of the ART MARKET PROVINCETOWN GALLERY from July - September 2013.
This Dead Drop is for operatives needing to pass critical information secretively to other, unknown operatives, but presumes that "operative" is code for artist.
The dead drop is located on the main street of a beach resort town which is famous for catering to artists and the international gay community. Approximately 80,000 people will pass by the dead drop over the Summer. A smaller number (including you) will know that it is there.
The criteria for the pieces included are that:
• The work must deal with death, subterfuge, and/or the occult. But these can be interpreted very liberally. (For example, one could address the death of a habit, the death of belief, the death of a goldfish, the death of the environment, etc.)
• The work must be made for one unknown person to find. It is assumed that the finder needs to know something very important, so you pieces share something very important. Maybe something that couldn't be shares via a live drop.
• The work must be enclosed or enclosable within something innocuous that can be easily placed or installed either in the gallery building or nearby outside of it.
• Artists are giving their work away to the "operative" who retrieves it.
This Dead Drop will just be passing crucial information about our deepest fears and strangest experiences on through a chain whose end we cannot know (in order to protect operational security.) We just have to trust that our information is getting where it needs to go.
All of this Dead Drop's contents will be documented and anyone who does not want to remain anonymous can be credited after the project is completed.
