Place yourself as if exiting the U.S. Post Office downtown and directly across Monroe is the alley in which SPIDROP_0 is to be found. On approach, the rear section of the building providing the west wall widens into the alley, forming a small corner that supports a gutter drain pipe. The dead drop is located a brick and a half before.
It can be anticipated that SPIDROP_0 will be dominated by the local hip-hop scene drawn to the weekly open mic battle hosted few steps around the corner. It is also walking distance from monthly events attracting the smart visual arts crowd. Thus, an opportunity for dialogue to develop between two incongruent sets.
Amenities include a nearby concrete form of uncertain purpose, but functional as a bench on which you may sit or stand alongside, talk on a mobile phone, smoke a cigarette, wait for a friend to do so, or merely pretend that's what you're doing. In this mode, you do not look terribly out of place. The position is a natural escape from the main sidewalk, offering absolute compliance with the ordinance on public smoking, modest privacy, yet comfort of being able to view an approaching intruder from most any direction that you may easily depart another to avoid them.
Be aware that facing the corner, jacked into the dead drop, you are visible from the parking lot on the opposite side of Monroe, through which a police patrol car may cruise as your back is turned. If you are male, the officer will perhaps be pleased to learn you had not mistaken this location for a convenient spot to urinate. No, you were strolling along, needed to consult your laptop, recognized the alley to be very narrow and gravitated here to defend against being hit by any inattentive driver who might pass through. The driver could be leaving one of several surrounding bars, and who knows how much they had to drink before they got behind the wheel? Thank goodness the police are here to protect us, but it would distract from more important duties if a pedestrian needed to be peeled from the pavement simply because they didn't exercise a trivial bit of caution. |
